Machines

What are machines? Objects designed to make work easier.
What are simple machines? Machines that have one part or very few parts and is designed to exert force.
What are complex machines? Have many parts that work together to do the job.
How many types of machines are there? Two
What is Lever? A simple machine that consists a rod or stick ,which is free to move about a fixed point or balancing point .
What levers are used for? To lift heavy objects.
What is fulcrum? The fixed point on which the lever turns or pivot to move the load.
What is a load? The object that is being moved by the machine.
What is Effort? The force applies to make the lever work.
Which class of lever the effort is in the middle? 3rd Class.
Which class of lever the fulcrum is in the middle? 1st Class.
Which class of lever the load is in the middle? 2nd class.
What are gears? Gears are rotating wheels,that moves in opposite directions.
Which gear will move faster? Big or small and why? The small one because it have fewer teeth.
What is a pulley? It is a simple machine made wit a rope( belt or chain) wrapped into the groove of a wheel.
What types of pulley it have? Fixed and moveable pulleys
What are fixed pulleys? The pulley is attached to a fixed surface, as the rope passes over the pulley, pulling on one end raising or lowers the Load on the other.
What are movable pulleys? This pulley is not attached to a fixed surface, but to the load itself and moves with it.
What is a inclined plane? A sloping surface (ramp) used for raising objects.
How does inclined planes makes work easier? By reducing the effort required to lift load.
How to make a hill less steep? You have to make it longer.
What is a screw? A spiral inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder.
Screws fact The closer together the treads the easier to screw into wood.
Screws fact2 Takes longer to push through since the screw have to be turned in rather than being pushed straight down
