Biomes Lesson 3

biome A group of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms
desert An area that receives less than 25 cm of rain per year
rain forests forests in which large amounts of rainfall year round
emergent The tallest layer of the rain forest which receives the most sunlight
canopy underneath up to 50 from leafy roof
understory below the canopy layer of shorter trees and vines
forest floor the bottom layer that is the ground
grassland An area that is populated mostly by grasses and other non-woody plants
savanna Grasslands that are located closer to the Equator than prairies
deciduous trees Trees that shed their leaves and grow new ones each year
boreal forests Dense forests found in Upper regions of the northern hemisphere
coniferous trees Trees that produce their seeds in cones and have leaves that shaped like needles
tundra and extremely cold biome that is also dry it may receive no more participation than in the desert
permafrost Frozen soil
