shearing stress that pushes masses of rock in opposite directions, in a sideways movement
stress a force that acts on rock to change its shape or volume
strike-slip fault the rocks on either side of the fault slip past each other sideways, with little up or down motion
surface waves a type of seismic wave that forms when p waves and s waves reach the earths surface
S wave a type of seismic wav that moves the ground up and down or side to side
tension stress that stretches rock so that it becomes thinner in the middle
tsunami a giant wave usually caused by an earthquake beneath the ocean floor
