| shearing | stress that pushes masses of rock in opposite directions, in a sideways movement |
| stress | a force that acts on rock to change its shape or volume |
| strike-slip fault | the rocks on either side of the fault slip past each other sideways, with little up or down motion |
| surface waves | a type of seismic wave that forms when p waves and s waves reach the earths surface |
| S wave | a type of seismic wav that moves the ground up and down or side to side |
| tension | stress that stretches rock so that it becomes thinner in the middle |
| tsunami | a giant wave usually caused by an earthquake beneath the ocean floor |
