| force | a push or pull that makes something move |
| gravity | a force that attracts two objects together |
| energy | the ability to do or to move something |
| friction | resists movement between two objects that are touching |
| motion | a change in position of an object over time |
| simple machine | a simple device that does work |
| wheel and axle | a simple machine with a round frame that turns on a central rod and makes it easier to move something |
| fulcrum | the fixed point or support on a which a lever turns when moving. The center of a seesaw |
| lever | a simple machine that has a bar which moves on or around a fixed point and can be used for lifting things |
| inclined plane | a simple machine with a flat surface set at an angle to a horizontal surface |
| pulley | a simple machine that has a wheel over which a rope or chains are pulled and makes it easier to lift something or move it sideways |
| screw | a simple machine that consists of an inclined plane that twists around a rod and is used to hold things together |
| wedge | a simple machine with 2 or more inclined planes and is used to split things apart |
| load | something that is lifted, carried, or supported |
