Study Guide for Weather Formative - Air Masses & Fronts - Part 2

QuestionAnswer
What are cyclones? swirling centers of LOW air pressure
Which way do cyclone wind spin in the Northern Hemisphere? counterclockwise, inward toward the center of low pressure
What are cyclones and decreasing air pressure associated with? clouds, wind, and precipitation
Where does air want to move? from high to low pressure
What are anticyclones? HIGH pressure centers of dry air
As the warm air at the center of the low rises what happens to its pressure? it decreases
How do winds spiral in an anticyclone? spirals outward from the center it, moving towards an area of low pressure
Because of the Coriolis Effect winds in an anticyclone spin which way in the Northern Hemisphere? clockwise
In an anticyclone, what happens to the temperature of the air as the relative humidity decreases? it cools off
In an anticyclone, what type of weather do you see as the cool air falls? clear and dry
What type of weather is associated with High Pressure in the summer? extended periods of dry, sunny days; in the extreme situations it can lead to heatwaves and droughts (also poor air quality and high pollen counts)
What type of weather is associated with High Pressure in the winter? cold, dry days with light winds; stratocumulus clouds can form leading to several days without sun, leading to lower temperatures; frost, light snow
What type of weather is associated with Low Pressure in the summer? periods of prolonged rainfall, which, in the extreme, can lead to flooding; thunderstorms are also common
What type of weather is associated with Low Pressure in the winter? stormy or wintery weather, heavy rain or snowfall; possible flooding
Why is the weather associated with High Pressure like that? air masses tend to be cooler, drier, and denser
Why is the weather associated with Low Pressure like that? air masses tend to be warmer, more humid, and less dense
Why does cool/cold air hold less water vapor? its particles are packed more tightly together
Why does warm air hold more water vapor? its particles are more spread out

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
