Study Guide for Weather Formative - Storms & Predicting Weather

QuestionAnswer
How does a Thunderstorm form? warm air is quickly pushed up by a cold front
How does lightning form? positive/negative charges build up in a storm cloud; spark caused as these charges to jump from one place to another in the cloud, from cloud to cloud, or from the cloud to the ground
What conditions must occur for a thunderstorm to form? a fast moving cold front runs into an area of hot, humid air
How does a snowstorm/blizzard form? if air stays colder than 0 degrees C (32 degrees F) and precipitation falls as snow
What conditions must occur for a snowstorm/blizzard to form? air must be colder than 0 degrees C (32 degrees F)
How does a tornado form? cold, dry air mass quickly pushes up a warm, humid air mass; the different winds created begin to push the air in a circular pattern
What conditions must occur for a tornado to form? cold, dry air quickly pushes warm, humid air up; forms over land areas
How does a hurricane form? as warm ocean waters quickly evaporate; air rises and forms clouds as more evaporation happens; wind speed/rainfall increases
What conditions must occur for a hurricane to form? warm ocean waters; low pressure system; this allows a lot of evaporation
Where do hurricanes form? warm ocean waters
Where do tornadoes form? over land
When do hurricanes form? Summer to Fall; the “Season” is June – November because the ocean has had all summer to heat up
When do tornadoes form? spring & early summer as ground is heating up from longer days
What type of damage does a hurricane do? storm surge and high winds
What type of damage does a tornado do? severe damage to all property from high winds
What are the results of storm surges during a hurricane? high waves, severe flooding, building damage, and beach erosion
What are the results of a high winds during a hurricane? downed trees, power lines, damage buildings, etc.
What do you do to stay safe during a hurricane? Evacuate
What do you do to stay safe during a tornado? Seek shelter in a storm shelter, the basement, or the lowest floor of building in a room without windows
What information do meteorologists need to predict the weather? Temperature, air pressure, relative humidity, wind speed and direction & location of the jet streams
What is an isobar? curvy lines on a map that connect areas with the same air pressure
What is isotherm? curvy lines on a map that connect places with the same temperature
