| habitat | an environment that provides the things a specific organism needs to grow, live, and reproduce |
| organism | a living thing |
| biotic factors | things that are living in a habitat |
| abiotic factors | nonliving things in a habitat |
| species | A group of organisms that can mate with each other and produce offspring that can also mate and reproduce |
| population | All members of One species living in a particular area |
| ecosystem | The community of organisms that live in a particular area, along with their nonliving environment |
| ecology | The study of how many organisms interact with each other and with their environment |
| death rate | The number of deaths per 1,000 individuals for a given time period |
| birth rate | The number of births per 1000 individuals for a given time period |
| immigration | moving into a population |
| emigration | leaving a population |
| population density | number of individuals in an area of a specific size |
| limiting factor | Environmental factor that cabooses population to stop growing or decreasing in size |
| carrying compacity | largest population that an area can support |
