Plant Diversity I: How Plants Colonized Land
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Sporopollenin | A layer of a durable polymer in charophyte algae that prevents exposed zygotes from drying out. Forms the walls of plant spores, preventing them from drying out |
| derived traits of plantae (5) | 1. alternation of generations 2. multicellular, dependent embryo 3. walled spores produced in sporangia 4. multicellular gametangia 5. apical meristems |
| alternation of generations | the life cycle in which there is both a multicellular diploid form and a multicellular haploid form. |
| gametophyte | the multicellular haploid form of organisms that have alternation of generations that produces haploid gametes by mitosis. Gametes unite and develop into sporophytes |
| sporophyte | the multicellular diploid form of organisms that have alternation of generations that results from the union of gametes. Meiosis in the sporophyte produces haploid spores that develop into gametophytes. |
| Spore | Reproductive cells that can develop into a new haploid organism without fusing with another cell |
| embryophytes | a name for plants that refers to their shared derived trait of multi cellular, dependent embryo. |
| Sporangia | multicellular organs of sporophytes that produce spores |
| sporocyte | diploid cells within sporangia that undergo meiosis to generate spores; (aka spore mother cell) |
| gametangia | multicellular plant structure in which gametes are formed. |
| archegonia | female gametangia; a pearl shaped organ that produces a single nonmotile egg that is retained in the bulbous part of the organ |
| antheridia | male gametangia; a moist chamber in which sperm is produced and released into the environment. |
