Weather and Climate

QuestionAnswer
In the Troposphere, the Alt ___ as the Temp____ Alt Increases as Temp Decreases
In the Stratosphere, The Alt____ as the Temp____ Alt Increases as Temp Increases
In the Mesosphere, The Alt____ as the Temp____ Alt Increases as Temp Decreases
In the Thermosphere, The Alt___ as the Temp ____ Alt Increase as Temp Increases
What layer contains the Ozone layer? Stratosphere
What layer has weather and water? Troposphere
Which layer has no solar energy absorption? Mesosphere
Which layer is hit by radiation first? Thermosphere
What is the Water Cycle? The process that water goes through to cleanse and filter water naturally.
What energizes the water cycle? The Sun energizes the water cycle.
What does infiltration mean? Rain water goes into the ground.
What does evaporation mean? Water turns into liquid gas using solar energy; vapor goes into atmosphere
What does precipitation mean? Liquid water falls to land from atmosphere due to condensation
What does Surface Runoff mean? Water on Earth's surface travels downward toward bodies of water.
What does Transpiration mean? Water vapor given off by plants that goes into the atmosphere
How is an Air mass determined? An air mass over water and/or land will be determined by the surface below
Attributes of Water? High specific heat long time to heat up takes a long time to cool down
Attributes of Land? Low specific heat Heats up fast and hot Cools down quickly
What kind of currents cause Land breeze and Sea breeze? Convection Currents
What is the main cause of weather? The state of the atmosphere at a specific time and place
What is the difference between Weather and Climate? Weather is day to day and can change quickly Climate is long term and takes much longer to change
What two factors determine climate? Temperature and Precipitation
What four factors determine Temperature? Latitude, Altitude, Ocean Currents, Distance from large bodies of water
What type of weather occurs with a Cold front? Heavy Thunderstorms/ Heavy Precipitation
What type of weather occurs with a Warm front? Noticeably warmer and more humid; may drizzle at front lines
What type of weather occurs at a Stationary front? A noticeable temperature change when you cross over the front
What type of weather occurs with a Low Pressure System? Usually cloudy, stormy weather
What type of weather occurs with a High Pressure System? No clouds or precipitaion
What is the difference between a Front and an Air Mass? Front - The boundary between 2 air masses with different temperatures, density or moisture Air Mass - Large body of air that has the same characteristics, density, and moisture as the surface below it
What does cP mean? Continental Polar ; Dry and Cold
What does cT mean? Continental Tropical ; Dry and Warm
What does mP mean? Maritime Polar ; Humid and Cold
What does mT mean? Maritime Tropical ; Humid and Warm
What is the Coriolis Effect?
What are Isobars? Lines that connect equal atmospheric pressure
What does it mean if they are close? There is a large pressure difference and strong winds
What does it mean if they are farther apart? There is less of a pressure difference and gentle winds
What provides hurricanes with their energy? Warm Waters
What ocean do hurricanes usually occur? Atlantic Ocean
What is the relationship between the pressure and wind speed in a hurricane? As the pressure decreases the Wind speed increases
How does this relationship affect the category of the hurricane? The higher the wind speed and lower the pressure, the higher the category.
What scale is used to determine the category of a hurricane? The Saffir/Simpson Hurricane Scale
What is a storm surge? The height of the waves afterwards
What causes a tornado to form? Direction and speed of wind rotating and/or cold front
What is the scale called that determines the strength or a tornado? The Fujita Scale

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
