WAVES

Study all about waves with this stack.

QuestionAnswer
Frequency The number of crests/troughs that pass by a given point per second.
Wavelength The distance between two crests/troughs in a wave.
Transverse wave A wave where the medium moves perpendicular to the direction of the wave.
Longitudinal Wave A wave where the medium moves parallel to the direction of the wave.
Medium Material in which a wave travels.
Mechanical Wave A wave that is caused when energy causes a vibration thru a medium.
Electromagnetic Wave A wave that does not travel through a medium and can travel through empty space.
Compression The area in a longitudinal wave where the particles are close together.
Crest The highest point of a transverse wave.
Energy The ability to move or change an object, or what a wave carries.
Rarefaction Area in a longitudinal wave in which the particles are spread out.
Trough The lowest point of a transverse wave.
How does a particle in a surface wave move? Circular
What is frequency measured in? Hz (Hertz)
Period The time between crests/troughs.
What is the formula to calculate wave speed? Frequency * wavelength
What do ALL waves carry? Energy
Reflection Bouncing of wave as it hits a surface.
Refraction Bending of waves as it moves through different substances.
Diffraction The bending of waves around a barrier.
What are the two types of interference? Constructive & Destructive.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
