Term | Definition |
---|---|
atom | A unit of matter, made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons. |
atomic number | The number of protons in an atom. This is also equal to the number of electrons in an atom. |
balanced equation | An equation in which the number of atoms of each type is the same on both sides of the arrow. |
chemical change | A change which results in new substances being formed. Not easily reversed. |
compound | A substance made of more than one type of atom, chemically combined in a fixed ratio. |
electron | Small, negatively-charged particle, which orbits the nucleus of an atom. |
electron configuration (E.C.) | The arrangement of electrons around the nucleus in electron shells, e.g. 2, 8, 6. |
electron shell | A grouping of atoms around the nucleus of an atom. |
element | A substance made of only one type of atom. |
ion | An atom which has lost or gained electrons. |
mass number | The number of protons + neutrons in an atom. |
mixture | A substance made of two or more different elements or compounds that are not chemically combined in a fixed ratio. |
molecule | Two or more atoms chemically bonded together. |
neutron | Particle with no charge, present in the nucleus of an atom. |
nucleus | The centre of an atom, made up of protons and neutrons. Makes up most of the mass of an atom. |
physical change | A change in the state of a substance. Usually reversible. |
proton | Positively-charged particle in the nucleus of an atom. |
