atomic number The number of protons in an atom. This is also equal to the number of electrons in an atom.
balanced equation An equation in which the number of atoms of each type is the same on both sides of the arrow.
chemical change A change which results in new substances being formed. Not easily reversed.
compound A substance made of more than one type of atom, chemically combined in a fixed ratio.
electron Small, negatively-charged particle, which orbits the nucleus of an atom.
electron configuration (E.C.) The arrangement of electrons around the nucleus in electron shells, e.g. 2, 8, 6.
electron shell A grouping of atoms around the nucleus of an atom.
element A substance made of only one type of atom.
ion An atom which has lost or gained electrons.
mass number The number of protons + neutrons in an atom.
mixture A substance made of two or more different elements or compounds that are not chemically combined in a fixed ratio.
molecule Two or more atoms chemically bonded together.
neutron Particle with no charge, present in the nucleus of an atom.
nucleus The centre of an atom, made up of protons and neutrons. Makes up most of the mass of an atom.
physical change A change in the state of a substance. Usually reversible.
