Plate Tectonics

This should help for the test! Made by John Cromwell for Mr. V's class!

QuestionAnswer
Who was responsible for the idea of Continental Drift? Alfred Wegner
What are the three main points of evidence for Continental Drift? Mountain Ridges (Rock evidence), Fossils, and Climate
What was the name of the super continent when all continents were together? Pangaea
What is the evidence for sea floor spreading? Mid-Ocean Ridges, the crust around the mid ocean ridge being younger
Why was the Theory of Continental drift rejected? Wegner didn't give enough evidence of why the continents were moving.
What did Harry Hess think was powering sea floor spreading? Convection
Where is the younger crust found? Close to the Mid-Atlantic ridge
How is the age of crust established? Using magnetic reversal and radiometric dating drilled samples.
What is a slab pull? Convection that also pulls a plate into the earth that is subducted.
What type of boundary do constructive forces happen at? Divergent Boundaries
What two theories come together to make the Theory of Plate tectonics? Sea Floor Spreading and Continental Drift
What type of boundary do destructive forces happen at? Convergent Boundaries
What is the Theory of Plate Tectonics? Motion on Earth where plates over the asthenosphere produce forces of convection currents
What powers the movement of Plate Tectonics? Convection Currents
What's the difference between compositional and mechanical layers? Compositional are separated into the layers they're made of, mechanical are separated by their properties.
What are the three types of plate boundaries? Convergent, Divergent, and Transform
What are the three compositional layers of the Earth? Core, mantle, and crust
What are the mechanical layers of the earth? Lithosphere, Asthenosphere, Mesosphere, Outer Core, and Inner Core
What is a famous example of a transform boundary? San Andreas Fault
What are the two types of crust in the earth? Oceanic Crust and the Continental Crust
What is the difference between Oceanic and Continental Crust? Oceanic is thin and composed of basalt, Continental is thick and composed of mostly granite.
What is the core mostly made of? Iron and Nickel
Which way do Divergent plates go? Divergent plates spread away from each other.
Which way do Convergent plates go? Convergent plates collide head on.
Which way do Transform plates go? Transform plates slide among each other in the opposite direction.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
