Cell Review Terminology for Benchmark 3/2018

cell wall thick surface structure that gives shape, support and protection to plant cells
nucleus control center of the cell; directs all the cells activities; involved in cell division
mitochondria releases energy for cell functions; powerhouse of the cell
ribosomes "factories" for building proteins
endoplasmic reticulum "roadways" for moving materials throughout the cell
nucleolus manufacture ribosome parts (proteins and RNA)
cytoplasm sticky, semi-fluid material inside a living cell in which the other cell organelles are suspended
lysosomes contain digestive ensymes
nuclear membrane encloses the cell's genetic material
vacuoles storehouse for excess water, food, wastes, etc.
chloroplasts green organelles of plant cells where photosynthesis takes place
golgi bodies packages useful materials and secretes them to the outside of the cell
chromatin strands within the nucleus which form chromosomes
cell membrane holds the contents of the cell together
DNA hereditary material that carries the genetic code
