Strategies for reading Nonfiction

| literary nonfiction | a type of nonfiction that is written to be read and experienced in much the same way as fiction |
| autobiography | the true story about a person's life told by that person |
| biography | the true story about a person's life told by someone else |
| essay | a short piece of nonfiction that deals with one subject |
| informal essay | an essay that explains how an author feels about a subject |
| formal essay | a type of essay that is serious and scholarly |
| skimming | quickly reading the main ideas to get an overview: title, heading, words in special type, charts, graphs, timelines |
| scanning | searching for a particular fact or definition |
