6th Grade Chapter 4

Rocks

QuestionAnswer
rock-forming mineral the common minerals that make up most of the rocks of Earth's crust
a rock's texture is the the look and feel of a rock's surface
igneous rock a type of rock that forms from the cooling of molten rock at or below the surface
sedimentary rock a type of rock that forms when particles from other rocks or the remains of plants and animals are pressed together and cemented together
metamorphic rock a type of rock that forms from an existing rock that is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions
extrusive rock an igneous rock that forms from lava on Earth's surface
intrusive rock an igneous rock that forms when magma hardens beneath Earth's surface
deposition a process in which sediment settles out of the water or wind carrying it
cementation the process by which dissolved minerals crystallize and glue particles of sediment together into one mass
an organic rock is chalk formed from sediments made of skeletons of microscopic living things in the ocean
chemical rock a sedimentary rock that forms when minerals that are dissolved in a solution crystallize on Earth's surface
foliated a term used to describe metamorphic rock that have grains arranged in parallel layers or bands
rock cycle a series of processes on the surface and inside Earth that slowly changes rocks from one kind to another
coarse-grained rock is when all the grains in a rock are large and easy to see
most metamorphic rock forms deep underground
igneous rock that cools very quickly when it forms may have a texture that is smooth and shiny with no visible grain
the most abundant intrusive rock in the continental crust is granite
to describe a rock's texture, geologists determine the size, shape, and pattern of the rock's grains
a coral reef forms from skeletons of coral animals
over time, coral buried by sediments can turn into limestone
geologists classify metamorphic rock according to the arrangement of the grains that make up the rock
a rock is made up of a mixture of minerals and other materials
erosion and deposition play roles in the formation of sedimentary rock
the names of the three major groups of rocks refer to how the rocks are formed
the characteristics that geologists use to identify rocks are color, texture, and the rock's mineral composition
granite is a light-colored rock because it is made up mostly of silica
because plate movements have raised ancient sea floors above sea level limestone that began as coral reefs can be found on the continents
erosion on a mountain range that was pushed up as a result of two continental plates colliding will lead to the formation of sedimentary rock
for granite to change into sandstone granite particles would have to settle on the ocean floor
