Chapter - Air Masses & Fronts

QuestionAnswer
What are the 4 types of air masses? Maritime Tropical, Maritime Polar, Continental Tropical & Continental Polar
Where does a maritime tropical air mass form? form over tropical oceans
What is the temperature and humidity of a maritime tropical air mass? warm, humid air masses
Where does a maritime polar air mass form? form over the icy cold North Pacific and North Atlantic oceans
What is the temperature and humidity of a maritime polar air mass? cool, humid air masses
When & where does a continental tropical air mass form? form mostly in summer over dry areas of the Southwest region of the US and northern Mexico
What is the temperature and humidity of a continental tropical air mass? hot, dry air masses
Where does a continental polar air mass form? form over central and northern Canada and Alaska
What is the temperature and humidity of a continental polar air mass? cold, dry air masses
In the continental US, what moves air masses? prevailing westerlies and jet streams
What are the 4 types of fronts? cold, warm, stationary & occluded
How does a cold front move and what kind of weather does it produce? it moves quickly and causes abrupt weather changes, which can produce thunderstorms
How does a warm front move and what kind of weather does it produce? it move slowly, so weather may be rainy or cloudy
What kind of weather does a stationary front produce? produces rain, snow, fog, or clouds
What kind of weather does a occluded front produce? produces clouds, rain, or snow
The characteristics of an air mass depend on what? the temperatures and moisture content of the region over which the air mass forms
What type of air has a higher air pressure? cold, dense air
What affects air pressure? temperature
What type of air has a lower air pressure? warm, less dense air
Whether an air mass is humid or dry depends on what? where it forms, water or land
