| DNA | Nucleic acids that are the main component of chromosomes. Responsible for transferring genetic characteristics |
| Ecosystem | A community of organisms that interact with their environment. |
| Genes | Hereditary information for traits that are passed on from parent to offspring. Located in DNA. |
| Natural Selection | A process by which organisms with favorable traits produce more successful offspring than organisms with less favorable traits |
| Pioneer Species | The first species to live or grow in an area, usually lichen |
| Primary Succession | Changes that occur as bare rock develops into a community of organisms. |
| Secondary Succession | Changes that occur in a series of stages as a community grows back after a natural disaster such as a flood or fire. Occurs in areas where soil and living things already exist. |
| Selective Breeding | Artificially selecting and breeding plants or animals to make organisms with desired traits |
