Adaptations modification of an organism or its parts that makes it better able to survive the conditions of its environment
Prairie a large open area of grassland

Membrane a thin sheet or layer
Streamlined a smooth shape which makes motion through water or air easier
Echolocation the ability to track the location of objects by reflected sound, used by animals such as dolphins and bats.
Insectivores an animal that eats insects
Eliminate remove or get rid of something
Dehydration to lose too much water
Glands an organ in the body that makes a substance which is used by the body
Streaked a long, thin mark that is a different color from its background
Modified to change some parts of (something) while not changing other parts
Function the special purpose or activity for which a thing exists or is used
Trait a quality that makes one person or thing different from another
Characteristics a special quality or trait that makes a person, thing, or group different from others
Nocturnal Active at night and sleeps in the day
Diurnal Active in the day and sleeps at night
Burrow a hole or tunnel in the ground that an animal makes to live in or for safety
Abiotic Another name for nonliving things or non-living elements Example: rocks, weather, soil, water, or temperatures.
Biotic any living thing, living elements.
Environment the conditions that affect the growth, health, progress, of something
Manufacture to make something by hand or machinery
Transfer to move from one person, place, or thing to another
Producers Organisms that make their own food through photosynthesis
Consumers Organisms that feed on other things because they can't make their own food
Population All of the same type of organisms living in the same environment
Factor something that helps produce or influence a result
Ecosystem All living and non-living things that interact with each other in an environment
Aquatic living or found in or near water
Terrestrial living or growing on land instead of in water or air
Interdependence Living things depending on each other
Camouflage To blend in to one's surroundings
Mimicry To pretend to be like or look like another organisms for protection
Metamorphosis The change in an organism that's going through its life cycle
Complete Metamorphosis Egg, larva, pupa, adult
Incomplete Metamorphosis A change in an organism where the nymph looks like a small adult
Nymph This organism resembles a smaller version of the adult
Larva This is the part of the life cycle where the organism just eats and grows
Pupa The organism is resting and new body parts are being formed (cocoon)
Species A group of organisms of the same kind that can produce offspring like themselves
Inherited Traits A trait passed from parent to offspring (eye color, height, hair color
Ancestor the organisms that came before the current one
Stage Specific period of time during life or growth
Niche An organism's roles in its environment
Instinct A behavior an animal does without being taught (Migration, hibernation)
Learned behavior A behavior that has to be taught (reading a book, riding a bike)
Habitat The place or environment where an organism naturally lives
