Chapter 2 Vocab

TermDefinition
1. Photosyntesis The process by which a cell captures energy in sunlight and uses it to make food.
2. Autotroph An organism that makes its own food
3. Heterotroph An organism that cannot make its own food
4. Chlorophyll The main pigment for photosynthesis in chloroplasts
5. Cellular Respiration The process by which cells obtain energy from glucose
6. Fermentation An energy releasing process that does not require oxygen
7. Cell Cycle The regular sequence of growth and division that cells undergo
8. Interphase The first stage of the cell cycle
9. Replication Next, the cell makes an exact copy of the DNA in its nucleus
10. Chromosomes Within the nucleus, DNA and proteins form threadlike structures called chromosomes
11. Mitosis The cell's nucleus divides into two new nuclei and one set of DNA is distributed into each daughter cell
12. Cytokinesis The final stage of the cell cycle, completes the process of cell division
