| geothermal energy | heat within the Earth is used to heat water which in turn is used to heat homes or power electric generators. |
| nonrenewable resources | materials or energy source that cannot be replaced during the time of a human life span. |
| fossil fuels | fuels such as natural gas, charcoal, peat, coal, and petroleum(oil) that releases energy when burned. |
| passive solar system | the sun's energy is collected through large south-facing windows, absorbed by tiles and bricks, and released when the air above the absorbing materials is cooler than the material. |
| conservation | the wise and careful use of a resource so that it may be available for future generations. |
| preservation | setting a resource aside so that it will not be used by this or future generations. |
