8.8AB H-R Diagram

QuestionAnswer
Absolute Magnitude a measure of how bright a star really is, if all stars were the same distance from Earth
Apparent Magnitude a measure of how bright a star appears as seen from Earth
Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram a diagram that shows the relationship between the brightness, surface temperature, and color of stars
Luminosity total amount of light (energy) emitted by a star or other celestial object
Magnitude the measure of the observed visible brightness of a star
Giant Stars most massive and most luminous stars; occupy the top region of the H-R Diagram
Dwarf Stars relatively small and low luminosity; include the majority of main sequence stars
Blue Stars The hottest star; over 25,000K
Red Stars the coolest stars; 3,500-5,000K
Spectra Class stars of similar size, temperature, composition, and other properties have similar spectra and are classified into the same class
Our Sun fairly average star and sits near the middle, a yellow-orange main sequence star
Main Sequence Star where most stars are on the H-R Diagram; a continuous and distinctive band of stars
