Robins Atmosphere
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Troposphere | The lowest layer of the atmosphere; where weather occurs |
| Stratosphere | The second lowest layer of the atmosphere; contains the ozone layer |
| Mesosphere | The third layer up in the atmosphere; protects from meteors |
| Thermosphere | The highest and hottest layer of the atmosphere; where the northern lights occur |
| Ozone | A protective layer within the atmosphere that blocks UV radiation |
| Weather | The day to day observations of a place |
| Climate | Observations of the weather over a long period of time; a generalization of the location |
| Air Mass | A large body of air that picks up the moisture and temperature of the area where it forms |
| Front | Where two air masses meet |
| Air Pressure | The pressure on the atmosphere |
| High Pressure | Brings fair weather |
| Low pressure | Brings poor weather |
| Thunderstorm | Storm characterized by generating lightning and thunder |
| Tornado | Measured on the Fujita scale |
| Hurricane | Measured on the Saffir-Simpson Scale; forms in warm, moist ocean |
| Warm Front | Warm air pushes cold air out; line with semi-circles |
| Cold Front | Cold air pushes warm air out; line with triangles |
| Occluded Front | Warm air squeezed between two cold air masses; line with semi-circle and triangle on same |
| Stationary Front | Front which does not move; line with semi-circle and triangle on opposite sides |
| Greenhouse Gases | Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Water Vapor |
| Greenhouse Effect | Natural warming of atmosphere by greenhouse gases; essential to survival on earth |
| Global Warming | Increased warming due to increased greenhouse gas emission |
| Ice Cores | Used to measure climate of past through trapped air bubbles in ice |
| Pollen Samples | Used to assess plant life of past climates through trapped pollen in lake beds |
| Tropical Climate | Warm temperatures year-round |
| Polar Climate | Cold temperatures year-round |
| Temperate Climates | NC climate; warm summers and cold winters |
| Highland Climate | Climate affected by altitude |
| Dry Climate | Climate in which precipitation does not exceed evaporation |
| Sea Level Rise | Rise in ocean levels due to rising temperatures and loss of ice |
| Ocean Acidification | Excess CO2 is absorbed by ocean, creating acidic water levels and destroying shellfish and coral reefs |
