High Pressure Brings fair weather
Low pressure Brings poor weather
Thunderstorm Storm characterized by generating lightning and thunder
Tornado Measured on the Fujita scale
Hurricane Measured on the Saffir-Simpson Scale; forms in warm, moist ocean
Warm Front Warm air pushes cold air out; line with semi-circles
Cold Front Cold air pushes warm air out; line with triangles
Occluded Front Warm air squeezed between two cold air masses; line with semi-circle and triangle on same
Stationary Front Front which does not move; line with semi-circle and triangle on opposite sides
Greenhouse Gases Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Water Vapor
Greenhouse Effect Natural warming of atmosphere by greenhouse gases; essential to survival on earth
Global Warming Increased warming due to increased greenhouse gas emission
Ice Cores Used to measure climate of past through trapped air bubbles in ice
Pollen Samples Used to assess plant life of past climates through trapped pollen in lake beds
Tropical Climate Warm temperatures year-round
Polar Climate Cold temperatures year-round
Temperate Climates NC climate; warm summers and cold winters
Highland Climate Climate affected by altitude
Dry Climate Climate in which precipitation does not exceed evaporation
