| extrusive rock | igneous rock formed from lava |
| intrusive rock | igneous rock formed from magma |
| sediment | small, solid pieces that come from rocks or living things |
| weathering | the effects of freezing and thawing, plant roots, acid, and other forces on rock. |
| erosion | the process by which running water, wind, gravity, or ice carries broken up rock and soil |
| deposition | the process by which sediment settles out of water or wind carrying it |
| compaction | the process pressed sediment together |
| cementation | the process in which dissolved minerals crystallize and glue particles of sediment together |
| clastic rock | sedimentary rock that is formed by squeezing sediment together |
| organic rock | forms in an area that the remains of plant and animals are deposited in layers |
| chemical rock | forms when minerals dissolved in a water solution crystallize |
| foliated | describes the thin, flat layering found in most metamorphic rocks |
| rock cycle | a series of processes that occur on earths surface and in the crust and mantle that slowly change rocks from one kind to another |
