scale to cosmologist
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| scale | a representation of the size of something |
| universe | the whole of all existing matter, energy, and space |
| galaxy | star system held together by gravitational attraction; contains solar system and other objects |
| solar system | planets and other objects orbiting a star(s) |
| astronomical unit (AU) | a unit of measurement equal to the average distance between the Sun and Earth (about 150 million km or 93 million miles) |
| light-year | a unit of measure representing the distance light travels in one year (9.46 x 1012km) |
| parsec | large distances such as galaxy to galaxy; 1 parsec = 3.26 light-years |
| nebula | general term used for any “fuzzy” patch on the sky, either light or dark; a cloud of swirling gas and dust |
| nebular theory | idea that the solar system evolved from a swirling cloud of gas and dust |
| constellation | grouping of stars in the night sky |
| planetesimals | one of the small bodies that formed from the solar nebula and eventually grew into protoplanets; matter that clumps together in small masses |
| protoplanetary bodies | a clump of material, formed in the early stages of solar system formation, which was the forerunner of the planets we see today; planetesimals clumping together |
| nuclear fusion | a nuclear process where atoms combine together to create energy; creates Sun’s energy |
| terrestrial planets | any of the planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, or Mars, or a planet similar in size, composition, and density to the Earth; consists mainly of rocky material |
| gas giants | the outer solar system planets; Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, composed mostly of hydrogen, helium, and methane |
| comets | a chunk of frozen gases, ice, and rocky debris that orbits the Sun |
| asteroids | a small planetary body in orbit around the Sun, larger than a meteoroid but smaller than a planet; many found in a belt between Mars and Jupiter |
| cosmologist | a scientist who studies the origin and dynamics of the universe |
