Layers of the Atmosp
Layers of the Atmosphere
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Troposphere | the layer of the atmosphere where weather occurs and our jet stream happens |
| Stratosphere | this layer of the atmosphere contains the ozone layer |
| Ozone | a form of oxygen composed of three oxygen atoms bonded together-in the lower atmosphere is a pollutant but in the upper atmosphere protects life from ultraviolet radiation. |
| Mesosphere | coldest layer of the atmosphere-where meteors burn |
| Thermosphere | houses the ionosphere and the exosphere - the hottest layer of the atmosphere |
| Ionosphere | an electrified region of the upper atmosphere where fairly large concentrations of ions and free electrons exist |
| Exosphere | the outermost atmospheric layer |
| Atmosphere | a mixture of gases that surrounds a planet |
| Ozone Layer | layer of gas in the stratosphere that absorbs ultraviolet radiation |
| Auroras | an atmospheric phenomenon consisting of bands of light caused by charged solar particles |
| Reflect | light is bouncing back from a surface |
| Absorb | to transform radiant energy into heat |
| Thermal | heat |
| Density | how tightly compact molecules are in a substance determines this-also equals mass/volume |
| Air Pressure | the force of air pushing on a surface |
| Altitude | The distance above sea level |
| Layers of the Atmosphere | divided into several different layers that are classified according to changes in temperature, gases present, and jobs they perform to keep Earth safe |
