Weather and Climate
CMS 17-18
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Weather | The short term state of the atmosphere, including, temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind, and visibility. |
| Relative Humidity | The ratio of the amount of water vapor in the air to the amount of water vapor needed to reach saturation at a given temperature. |
| Precipitation | Any form of water that falls to Earth's surface from the clouds, includes rain, snow, sleet, and hail. |
| Wind | The movement of air caused by differences in air pressure. |
| Humidity | The amount of water vapor in the air |
| Dew Point | The temperature at which the rate of condensation equals the rate of evaporation. (at constant pressure and water vapor content) |
| Air Pressure | The measure of force with which air molecules push on a surface. |
| Visibility | The distance at which a given standard object can be seen and identified by the unaided eye. |
| Air Mass | A large volume of air that has nearly the same temperature and humidity |
| Jet Stream | A narrow band of strong winds that blow in the upper troposphere |
| Warm Front | Transition zone where a warm air mass is replacing a cold air mass. |
| Cold Front | Transition zone where a cold air mass is replacing a warmer air mass. |
| Front | The boundary between air masses of different densities and usually different temperatures |
| Stationary Front | A pair of air masses, neither of which is strong enough to replace the other. |
| Occluded Front | When a warm air mass is caught between two cold air masses |
| Ocean Current | A movement of ocean water that follows a regular pattern |
| Climate | The weather conditions in an area over a long period of time |
| Latitude | The angular distance north or south of the equator; expressed in degrees |
| Elevation | The height of an object above sea level |
| Topography | The size and shape of the land surface features of a region |
| Surface Current | A horizontal movement of ocean water that is caused by wind that occurs at or near the ocean's surface |
