| weather | The condition of the earth’s atmosphere |
| Atmosphere | Layers of gases that surround the planet |
| Water vapor | Water in a form of a gas |
| Density | The amount of mass in a given volume in the air |
| Air pressure | The result of the weight of a column of air pushing on an area |
| Barometer | It measures pressure |
| Mercury barometer | A tool to measure air pressure that uses mercury to help measure it |
| Aneroid barometer | A tool to measure air pressure that uses a metal chamber that’s sensitive to changes to air pressure |
| Altitude | The distance from sea level |
| Troposphere | The lowest layer of the atmosphere |
| Stratosphere | The second layer of the atmosphere |
| Mesosphere | The middle layer of the atmosphere |
| Thermosphere | The last layer of the atmosphere |
| Ionosphere | The first layer of the Thermosphere |
| Exosphere | The last layer of the Thermosphere |
| Electromagnetic waves | A kind of energy that is able to move through a space vacuum |
| Radiation | The direct transfer of electromagnetic waves |
| Infrared radiation | A form of electromagnetic waves that are longer than red |
| Ultraviolet radiation | Invisible form energy with wavelengths that are shorter than violet |
| Scattering | A process of particles and gases disperse in light in the atmosphere |
| Greenhouse effect | The gases that hold heat in the earth’s atmosphere |
| Temperature | Average amount of energy of motion |
| Thermal energy | Measures the total energy of motion |
| Thermometer | Measures temperature |
| Heat | Thermal energy transferring from a hot object to a colder one |
| Convection | The transfer of heat by the movement of fluids |
| Conduction | The transfer of heat from substances in direct contact |
| Convection currents | The upward movement of warm air and the downward movement of colder air |
| Wind | Flow of air |
| Anemometer | Measures wind speed |
| Windchill factor | The increased cooling that a wind can cause |
| Local winds | Winds that can blow over short distances |
| Sea breeze | Local wind that blows from a body of water |
| Land breeze | The flow of the air from the land to a body of water |
| Global winds | Winds that blow over long distances |
| Coriolis effect | The way Earth’s rotation makes winds curve |
| Latitude | Distance from the equator measured in degrees |
