Atmosphere
4th Grade Earth Science.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Atmosphere | a mixture of gases that surrounds Earth. Contains 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.039% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases, including water vapor |
| altitude | height above sea level or the earth's surface |
| troposphere | The lowest layer of the atmosphere and contains weather. Temperature decreases with higher altitude. |
| stratosphere | the layer of the atmosphere that is above the troposphere. Temperature increases with higher altitude. |
| ozone | a form of oxygen gas inside the stratosphere, absorbs ultraviolet rays from the sun and then releases some of this energy in the form of heat. |
| mesosphere | the layer of the atmosphere between the stratosphere and thermosphere. Temperature dUpper most layer of Earth's atmosphere; has two layers ionosphere and exosphere. Temperature increases with altitude.ecreases with higher altitude. |
| thermosphere | Upper most layer of Earth's atmosphere; has two layers ionosphere and exosphere. Temperature increases with altitude. |
| radiation | The transfer of energy through matter or space as electromagnetic waves (visible light or infred) |
| conduction | The transfer of heat through direct contact of materials of different temperature |
| convection | the transfer of heat thru the movement of a fluid, either a gas or liquid |
| green house | earth's atmosphere traps solar radiation, caused by the presence in the atmosphere of gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane. |
| gobal warming | An increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere, especially a sustained increase sufficient to cause climatic change. |
| water cycle | the continuous process by which water moves from Earth's surface to the atmosphere and back |
| evaporation | a process at which molecules at the surface of a liquid absorb enough energy to change to the gaseous state |
| condensation | water vapor cools and becomes a liquid |
| precipication | when water in the form of ice, rain, sleet, hail, or snow falls to the Earth |
| transpiration | the water that plants give off as part of their respiratory process |
| run off | when precipitation hits the ground, it is either absorbed, or it flows over the surface of the earth |
| water vapor | water in its gas form |
| ground water | water that is in the ground |
