TermDefinition
Wavelength The distance between two corresponding parts of a wave.
Ultraviolet Waves Waves that are shorter than visible light waves.
Trough Lowest point of a wave.
Transverse Waves Motion of particles is up and down at right angles.
Amplitude Distance a wave rises or falls from its rest position.
Crest Highest point of a wave.
Differaction The bending of waves around the edge of a barrier.
Electromagnetic Waves Combination of alternating electric and magnetic fields.
Frequency Number of waves passing a given point in a period of time.
Hertz Wave measurement equal to one cycle per second.
Infrared Waves Waves that are longer than visible light waves.
Longitudinal Waves Motion of particles is back and forth parallel (horizontal) to the direction of the wave.
Medium A material through which a wave travels.
Interference Effect that occurs when 2 or more waves meet.
Vibration A repeated back and forth or up and down motion that creates a wave.
