ESS Moon and its phases

TermDefinition
Lunar Cycle The different phases of the moon
Phase A distinct (certain) part of a process
Lunar eclipse Occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into its umbra or shadow.
New Moon First lunar phase when the moon is NOT visible because it crosses between the Sun and Earth
Full Moon When the moon appears fully lit (illuminated) from Earth and occurs when Earth is located directly between the Sun and the Moon
Umbra The fully shaded inner region of a shadow made by a object.
Penumbra The partially shaded outer region of a shadow made by an object.
crescent Moon The phase that occurs between the new moon and quarter moon and only 1/4 is lit up
First quarter Moon The phase of the lunar cycle when you see HALF of the moon and the illumination is increasing
Last quarter Moon The phase of the lunar cycle when you see HALF of the moon and the illumination is decreasing
gibbous Moon The Moon phase that fall between the quarters and the full Moon and is 3/4 lit up
Illumination light
Waxing The RIGHT side of the moon is lit up
Waning The LEFT side of the moon is lit up
