Rock and Soil Test

Use this stack to help you prepare for your soil and rock test.

What is humus? Pieces of dead organic matter
What process breaks down rocks? Weathering
What is soil made of? Weathered rocks, decayed plants, and animal matter
What type of soil has large grains? Sand
What type of soil has grains smaller than sand? Silt
What type of soil has grains smaller than silt and sand? Clay
What type of soil has the smallest grain? Clay
What type of soil would you use to grow a garden? Soil with lots of humus
What type of soil would be best for a playground? Sandy soil
What are rocks made from? Minerals
What is a mineral? A solid nonliving substance found in nature
What is an igneous rock? Forms when lava cools and hardens
What is a sedimentary rock? Forms when rock is weathered into small bits and then packed into LAYERS
What is a metamorphic rock? Forms when rock is exposed to heat and pressure and CHANGES, but does not melt
What are the properties of a mineral? Luster, hardness, and color
What are the properties of soil? Texture, content, and grain size
Which kind of soil is best for growing plants because it has essential nutrients from decaying plant and animal material? humus
What kind of soil has a lot of space in between particles and feels gritty? sand
What type of soil is sticky when wet and crumbly when dry? clay
