Earth's Changes

QuestionAnswer
How would the permeability of soil be determined/calculated Divide the volume of water by the time passed
how does stream discharge affect the speed of erosion along a river Greater discharge = greater erosion
What are two ways stream discharge can increase -Increase speed of the waterflow -Increase volume of water
Increase permeability -Gentle rain -Gentle slopes -Sand -Dense vegetation -Forests
Decrease permeability -Rapid rain events -Steep slopes -Clay -Agriculture -Urbanization -Low vegetation
Describe the relationship between weathering, erosion, and deposition Weathering is the breaking down of rocks/minerals into sedimentary Erosion is when these sediments are moved to a new location until eventually they get.. Deposited, or dropped, at a new location
How does a delta form Rivers carry sediments downstream. Eventually when the river or stream runs into a standing body of water, it loses energy, causing the sediments to drop Eventually when enough of these sediments pile up, it creates a fan-shaped landform called a delta
Explain what a hydrograph is and how a flood might be shown on a hydrograph A hydrograph is a sensor that monitors river discharge.
What factors may cause a hydrograph to "spike," or dramatically increase If the river were to flood, discharge would increase, leading to a spike in the hydrograph
What is "ice wedging?" A physical weathering process in which water freezes in the cracks of a rock, causing the frozen ice to expand. When it expands, it enlarges the crack, eventually causing the rock to break
How does sediment size affect soil permeability The larger the sediments, the higher the permeability
Identify advantages and disadvantages of farming in a floodpain. Describe the constructive and destructive processes that would occur Advantage - Sediments deposited by flooding will continue to fill the area with good soil for farming Disadvantage - Area is prone to flooding which will cause damage to crops, or deposit heavy amounts of sediment
What is the difference between mechanical/physical weathering and chemical weathering Mechanical - Physical breakdown of rocks/minerals Chemical - Breakdown of rocks; dissolving
Identify areas/landforms that may be exposed to weathering/erosion Erosion - Arches, hoodoo, decrease in hill size, valleys Deposition - Increase in hillsize, delta
Identify several depositional environments -Entering a standing body of water (lake/ocean) forming a delta -At the bottom of a hill, valley, or low elevation
What two factors control flooding in an area -High volume of water -In a very short period of time (too much to permeate)
What is soil composed of Rocks, minerals, organic material
Define sedimentary rock Rock formed by sediment and rock fragments compressed and cemented together. Typical form in bodies of water (when layers of sediment pile a top one another)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
