Nervous System and Senses
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Afferent Neurons | Also called sensory neurons, they carry messages to the CNS. |
| Autonomic Nervous System | A subdivision of the PNS that is involuntary. |
| Axon | The structure of a neuron that carries a signal away from the cell body. |
| Brain Stem | The portion of the brain that contains the medulla, pons and midbrain. |
| Central Nervous System | The anatomy includes the brain and spinal cord, the physiology include integration. |
| Cerebellum | The part of the brain that is responsible for movement and coordination. |
| Cerebrospinal Fluid | The fluid that fills the ventricles of the brain and surrounds the brain and spinal cord. It's function is to help cushion and protect the CNS. |
| Dendrites | The part of the neuron that senses stimuli and directs the impulse toward the cell body. |
| Depolarization | The loss of the negative charge inside the cell. Occurs during a nerve impulse. |
| Efferent Neurons | Also called motor neurons, they carry responses from the CNS to the effector organ. |
| Gray Matter | Unmyelinated nervous tissue in the CNS. |
| Meninges | The three layers of protective tissue around the brain and spinal cord. |
| Myelin | A white, fatty substance that helps insulate axons and increase the effectiveness of the nerve impulse. |
| Nerve | A bundle of neurons outside the CNS. |
| Neuron | A nerve cell. A cell that is specialized to be irritable and conduct electrical impulses. |
| Nodes of Ranvier | Gaps in the myelin that surrounds an axon. |
| Peripheral Nervous System | The anatomy includes the nerves ound outside the brain and spinal cord. The physiology includes sensing stimuli and transmitting messages. |
| Plexus | A complex network of nerves that controls a limb. |
| Polarized | the states of an unstimulated neuron in which the inside of the cell is relatively negative in comparison to the outside of the cell; the resting state. |
| Receptor | a peripheral nerve ending specialized for response to a certain type of stimulus, found on the ends of the dendrites. |
| Reflex | Automatic responses to stimuli. |
| Repolarization | Returning a cell to the polarized state. |
| Somatic Nervous System | The voluntary subdivision of the PNS. |
| Synapse | A region between neurons where they almost meet. Neurotransmitters are required to carry an impulse across the synapse. |
| White Matter | Nervous tissue characterized by having myelin. |
| Blind spot | The area of the retina where the optic nerve leaves the eyeball. |
| Lens | Focuses the light that enters the eye. |
| Iris | Acts as a diaphragm to control the amount of light that enters the eye. |
| Cornea | The transparent anterior portion of the eye. |
