earth's forces
| Term | Definition |

| stress | movement of the Earth's plates creates enormous forces that squeeze or pull the rock in the crust |
| tension | stress force that pulls on the crust stretching rock to become thinner in the middle |
| compression | stress force that squeezes rock until it folds or breaks |
| shearing | stress that pushes rock in two opposite directions. It can cause rock to break or slip apart or to change shape. |
| normal fault | tension in Earth's crust pulls rock apart |
| hanging wall | the block of rock that forms the upper half of a fault |
| -footwall | the block of rock that forms the lower half of a fault |
| reverse fault | same structure of a normal fault, but the blocks move in the opposite direction |
| strike-slip fault | tne rocks on either side of the fault slip past each other sideways with little up or down motion |
| anticline | a fold in rock that bends upward into an arch |
| syncline | a fold in rock that bends downward to form a valley |
| plateau | large area of flat land high above sea level |
