QuestionAnswer
What happens to oceans currents as they move closer to the equator? They get warmer and less dense
What happens to oceans currents as they move closer to the north and south poles? They get colder and more dense
Describe a surface current Wind, low density, warm temperature, low salinity
What process brings cold water and nutrients from the ocean floor to the surface? Upwelling
How does the rotation of the Earth effect surface currents? Coriolis Effect- bends the currents based on rotation
How density affect ocean water? Some water sinks, some water rises, it creates currents.
What are the causes of ocean waves? Wind, Tsunami, Landslide
What is the effect of ocean waves? Weathering, erosion, deposition
What factors influence the size of the a wave? speed, duration of wind, distance of wind
What is the cause of tides? The gravity from the Sun + Moon
What is the effect of tides? The rise + fall of water level
How many high tides occur in a day? 2
How many low tides occur in a day? 2
How many hours are between high tide and low tide? 6 hrs
How many hours are between each high tide? 12 hrs
How many hours are between each low tide? 12 hrs
If a high tide occurs at 6 am when will low tide occur? 12 pm
If high tide occurs at 8 am when will the next high tide occur? 8 pm
If low tide occurs at 4 am when will the next low tide occur? 4 pm
If the Sun is so much larger, why does the Moon have a greater impact on the tides on Earth? It's closer to the Earth
What causes surface currents, but not deep sea (density) currents? wind
What happens to the speed and height of waves when it hits the shore? slows down/ gets higher
