8.1 & 8.2 Rocks and MInerals

| fracture | when a mineral breaks apart in an irregular way |
| geode | rounded, hollow rock that is often lined with mineral crystals |
| crystallization | the process by which atoms are arranged to form a material that has a crystal structure. |
| solution | a mixture in which one substance is dissolved in another |
| vein | a narrow channel or slab of a mineral that is different from the surrounding rock |
| rock forming mineral | minerals that make up most of the earths crust - about 20 |
| granite | generally light colored rock that has high silica content - continental crust |
| basalt | dark colored rock that has low silica content - oceanic crust |
| grains | particles of minerals or rocks |
| texture | the look and feel of a rocks surface |
| igneous rock | forms from the cooling of lava or magma |
| sedimentary rock | forms when small particles of rocks or the remains of plants and animals are pressed and cemented together |
| metamorphic rock | forms when rock is changed by heat and pressure or by chemical reactions |
