Parts of a flower

TermDefinition
Stigma The sticky part of the pistil
Pistil or carpel The female reproductive part of the flower
sepal The small , leaflike parts of a flower.
anther The part that makes the pollen
filament It supports the anther
petal the colorful part if the flower
ovary It is a hollow structure that protects the seed as it develops.
stamen The male reproductive parts of the flower.
style A slender tube that connect the stigma to a hollow structure at the base of the flower.
tropism a plant's growth response towards or away from the stimulus
hormone it is a chemical that affects how the plant grows and develops
auxin it speeds up the rate at which a plants cells grow and controls a plant's response to light
photoperiodism it is a plants response to seasonal changes in length of night and day
critical night length it is the number of hrs of darkness that determines whether or not a plant will flower
Short - day plants it is when nights are longer than a critical length
Long - day plants its when nights are shorter than critical length
Day- neutral plants its a flowering cycle that is not sensitive to periods of light and dark
dormancy it is a period when an organism's growth or activity stops
thigmotropism touch
phototropism light
gravitropism gravity
positive tropism
negative tropism when a plant is growing a way from the stimulus
