| hydrosphere | the water on the planet |
| lithosphere | the solid crust of the planet |
| altitude | the increasing of height (moving from the ground to the sky) |
| temperature gradient | when temperature changes with altitude changes |
| temperature inversion | when cold air goes under a pocket of warm air; occurs in winter mostly; During inversions, temperature increases with altitude |
| troposphere | the first layer of the atmosphere above the ground; where weather, breathable air, and heat are concentrated |
| ozone | gas in the stratosphere that adsorbs most of the suns harmful ultraviolet radiation |
| stratosphere | the layer above the troposphere that contains the ozone layer; it starts 10 km above ground |
