wave refraction the bending of waves so that they move nearly parallel to the shoreline
beach an area where lose sediment is deposited and moved about waves along the shore
estuary coastal area of lowest salinity often occurs where the lower end of a freshwater stream or river enters the ocean
longshore bar a ridge parallel to the beach, formed by currents set up by breaking waves
longshore current a water current that travels near and parallel to the shoreline
barrier island a long, relatively narrow island running parallel to the mainland-built up by the action of waves and currents and serving to protect the coast from erosion by surf and tidal surges
continental margin a boundary between continental crust and oceanic crust
continental shelf a gently sloping, shallow area of the ocean floor that extended outward from the edge of a continent
turbidity current strong current caused by underwater landslide; a submarine suspension of sediment
continental rise the gently sloping section of the continental margin located between the continental slope and the abyssal plain
abyssal plain a large, flat, almost level area of the deep-ocean basin
deep-sea trench a long, narrow deep depression in the ocean floor which typically runs parallel to a plate boundary and makes a subduction sone
mid-ocean ridge an underwater mountain chain where new ocean floor is formed
seamount a volcanic mountain rising from the ocean floor that doesn't reach the surface
