Unit 6 Vocabulary
Investigating Flow of Energy and Cycling of Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Biomass | total mass of living organisms in a specific area |
| Chlorophyll | the green substance (pigment)in the chloroplast of plant leaves that captures the energy from sunlight. |
| Chloroplast | organelle of a plant cell, site of photosynthesis |
| Compost Bin | a collection of decaying plant material, it can be used as fertilizer |
| Decomposition | the process of decomposers breaking down dead material and waste into simpler material |
| Energy pyramid | a diagram that demonstrates the flow of energy through a food chain. |
| Glucose | a sugar molecule that is a product of photosynthesis. |
| Photosynthesis | the process of plants (producers) using energy from the sun to create their own food. (Radiant energy to chemical energy) |
| Trophic Level | the position that an organisms holds in a food chain, food web, or energy pyramid |
| Consumer | an organism that feeds on other organisms or organic matter. Heterotroph that does not create its own food. |
| Decomposer | an organism that decomposes organic material. (ex: worm or fungus) |
| Food chain | shows how each living thing gets its food, and shows how energy and energy are passed from creature to creature. |
| Food web | a system of interdependent food chains It is all of the food chains in a single system. |
| Producer | organism that can make its own food. (Ex: plants, use energy from the sun to make their own food). |
| Radiant light energy | energy from the sun |
