Earth Surface Vocab

Plate Movement Idea of giant plates of rock moving slowly across the Earth's surface.; also known as the theory of plate techtonics.
destructive process breaking down or wearing away of land and landforms
weathering destructive force that breaks down rock in to smaller pieces.
earthquake cause of violent shacking of Earth's crust as built-up energy is released
constructive building up of land or the creation of landforms
impact of organism when people and animals constantly erode the earth around them
erosion a destructive force in which pieces of rock are moved by water, wind, or moving ice
deposition constructive force in which sediments that have been moved from one place are dropped or released in another place
storm drain a system of pipes or channels that carry away storm water
Flood forecasting The use of forecasted precipitation and streamflow data in rainfall-runoff and streamflow routing models to forecast flow rates and water levels for periods ranging from a few hours to days ahead, depending on the size of the watershed or river basin.
dam A wall across a river that controls the flow of river water.
terrace farming When crops are planted on level sections called terraces
levee A wall along a river or other body of water that serves to prevent flooding by keeping water behind it.
contour plowing When soil is plowed in curved rows that follow the shape of the land.
seawall A tall wall built along the rear edge of a beach.
GIS maps A geographic information system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of geographical data.
jettie A thin, narrow wall built from the shore line into the ocean.
seismological studies The study of seismic waves and energy waves caused by rock suddenly breaking apart within the earth or the slipping of tectonic plates. We know these as events as earthquakes.
infrared satellite imagery A display of objects like weather clouds, water, and land surfaces based on the temperature of the object.
