Meteorology

TermDefinition
Ozone Layer Found in the stratosphere. Protects life on Earth by absorbing harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
Troposphere The lowest layers of the atmosphere, in which temperature decreases as altitude increases. It contains 90% of the atmosphere's total mass. All weather occurs here.
Stratosphere The layer above the troposphere. Temperature rises as altitude increases.
Mesosphere The layer above the stratosphere. It is the coldest layer. Temperature decreases as altitude increases.
Thermosphere The uppermost atmospheric layer. Temperature increases as altitude increases.
Conduction The transfer of energy as heat through direct contact.
Radiation The transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves through space.
Local Winds Winds that are influenced by the geography of an area and blow over short distances. Ex= Land/sea breeze
Global Winds Winds that blow steadily from specific directions over long distances. EX= trade winds/westerlies
Air Pressure The measure of the force with which air molecules push on a surface.
