Rocks and Minerals

What is Mohs' hardness scale? Mohs' hardness scale is used to determine the hardness of minerals.
How do you use Mohs' hardness scale? The higher the number the harder the mineral. Minerals with high numbers are harder than minerals with lower numbers.
How does an igneous rock form? Igneous rock forms when magma cools and solidifies.
How does a coarse-grained igneous rock form? Coarse grained igneous rock takes a long time to cool therefore it has a long time to form large crystals.
How does Sedimentary rock form? Sedimentary rocks are formed when rock is weathered and then the particles are eroded and form sediment. The sediment is then compacted and cemented together.
What's the difference between clastic, chemical and organic sedimentary rock? Clastic sedimentary rock is formed when rock or mineral fragments stick together. Chemical sedimentary rock is formed when minerals crystallize out of solution, such as sea water. Organic sedimentary rock is formed from the remains of organisms.
What is the difference between foliated and non-foliated rock? Foliated metamorphic rock has minerals that are lined up like pages in a book. Non-foliated metamorphic rock does not have any regular pattern.
How is metamorphic rock formed? Metamorphic rock forms by undergoing extreme heat and pressure.
What type of rock is Pumice? Pumice is an igneous rock.
What type of rock is Obsidian? Obsidian is an igneous rock.
What type of rock is Conglomerate? Conglomerate is an sedimentary rock.
How do scientists classify rocks? Scientists classify rocks by their composition and texture.
What is the smallest part of an element that has all of the properties of that element called? Atom.
What is a compound? A compound is a substance made of 2 or more elements that have been chemically joined.
What is a substance that cannot be broken down chemically into a simpler form called? Element.
What is a crystal? Crystals are solid, geometric forms of minerals produced by a repeating pattern of atoms.
What type of rock is Sandstone? Sedimentary.
What is then difference between silicate and non-silicate? A silicate is made from silicon and oxygen and a non-silicate is made from other elements.,
What is then difference between a cleavage and a fracture? Cleavage is a clean flat cut or natural break. A fracture is a irregular break along a curved surface.
How do you get a minerals's streak? A minerals's streak is found by rubbing then mineral against a streak plate. The color that rubs off is the elements true color.
What is density? Density refers to how much mass is in a certain volume.
What is a mineral's luster? Luster is the way a mineral reflects light. It is metallic, non-metallic or sub-metallic.
Why is magnetism considered to be a property that is only applied to certain minerals? Only two minerals are naturally magnetic.
What physical property of minerals is expressed in numbers? Hardness.
Why is a minerals's streak not necessarily the same as its color? the color of a minerals's streak may be different from then apparent color of the mineral because the surface color of the mineral may be affected by weathering and other impurities.
What type(s) of rock can wear away and break into sediment? All of them.
Where does magma form? Magma forms deep beneath the Earth's surface.
How is texture different from composition? Texture is determined by the sizes, shapes and positions of the grains that go into the rock. Composition is determined by the kinds of minerals that make up then rock.
What do scientists use to help them classify the three main types of rock? Rocks are classified by the way they are formed.
What is another name for metamorphic rock? Changed rock.
What is another name for sedimentary rock? Weathered rock.
What is another name for igneous rock? Fire rock.
What is the difference between extrusive and intrusive rock? Intrusive igneous rock forms inside the Earth's surface. therefore, it takes a long time to cool so it has large crystals. Extrusive igneous rock cools on the surface of then Earth. Therefore, it cools quickly so it contains either very small crystals or

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
