| S waves | side to side body waves |
| surface waves | side to side, rolling, elliptican |
| seismograph | records seismic waves |
| seismogram | records vibrations |
| Richter Scale | numerical scale (1-9) based on heigh of largest seismic wave emagnitude |
| Moment Magnitude Scale | more accurate as it measures the amount of enegry released |
| Modified Mercalli Scale | Roman numeral scale(I-XII) that measures the intensite (ground shaking) created by an earthquake |
| liquefaction | where soil and rock are saturated with water, earthquakes can cause a process |
| tusnami | is a wave formed when ocean floor shifts suddenly during an earthquake |
| seismic gap | is an area along a fault where there has not been an earthquake activity for a long period of time |
