Elastic rebound Sudden return of a deformed rock back to undeformed shape
Body waves Seismic waces that move through the inside of Earth
P waves Push- pull waves
Surface waves Seismic waves that move on Earth's surface
seismograph Pen traces vibration onto a moving drum of paper

Moment Magnitude scale More accurate as it measures the amount of energy released
Modified Mercalli Scale Roman numeral scale that measures the intensity created by an earthquake

Tsunami A wave that is formed when the ocean floor shifts suddenly during an earthquake

Crust The thin, rocky outer layer of Earth, is divided into oceanic and continental crust
Mantle A solid, rocky shell that extends to the to a depth of 2890 kilometers
