TermDefinition
Earthquake The vibration of earth produced by the rapid release of energy within the lithosphere.
Focus Fault beneath the surface.
Seismic Waves The energy released by the earthquake traveling from all directions.
Epicenter Location on the surface directly above the focus.
Elastic Rebound Hypothesis that most earthquakes are produced by the rapid release of energy stored in rock that has been subjected into great forces.
Body Waves Main type of seismic waves.
P waves Push-Pull waves.
S waves Shake particles at the angels direction of travel.
Surface Waves When body waves reach the surface.
Seismograph Instrument to record seismic waves.
Seismogram A time produced motion during the earthquake.
Richter Scale Measure earthquake magnitude.
Moment Magnitude Scale Measure earthquake magnitude.
Modified Mercalli Scale Based on earthquake intensity.
Liquefaction Earthquakes can cause a problem like----.
Tsunami A wave formed when the ocean floor suddenly shakes during an earthquake.
Seismic Gap An area along a fault where there has not been any earthquake activity for a long period of time.
Crust The thin, rocky outer layer of earth.
Mantle A solid, rocky shell.
Outer Core A liquid layer 2260 Kilometers thick.
Inner Core A sphere having a radius of 1220 kilometers.
Moho Boundary between earths crust and mantle.
Ring Of Fire Area where large numbers of earthquakes happen.
Hot Spot Volcanic areas far from plate boundaries.
Viscosity How much is in something.
Vent An exit.
Pyroclastic Material Another name for cloud of ash.
Volcano A "Vent" and exit for magma to come out of the earth.
Crater Something that leaves a dent in earths surface??
Shield Volcano A volcano used usually for lava flow.
Cinder Cone A steep cone shaped volcano.
Composite Volcano Built up by several layers of hardened lava.
Caldera Follows up magma.
Lahar Destructive mudflow on a volcano.
Pluton A body of intrusive igneous rock.
Sill Parallel igneous rock,
Laccolith A sheet with 2 layers of igneous rock.
Dike Something to block water from getting out.
Batholith Large mass of igneous rocks.
