Earthquake | a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earths crust or volcanic action. |
Focus | the center of interest or the center of something active. |
Seismic Waves | the amount of earth quakes that happen in an area. |
Epicenter | the point of earths surface vertically above the focus of an earth quake. |
Elastic rebound | this is how energy is released from am earth quake. |
Body waves | seismic waves that move through the inside of earth. |
P waves | longitudinal earthquake wave that travels through the interior of the earth and is usually the first conspicuous wave to be recorded by a seismograph |
S waves | wave motion in a solid medium where the medium moves perpendicular to the direction of the travel of the wave. |
Surface waves | a seismic wave that travels across the surface of the earth. |
Seismograph | an instrument that measures and records details of earthquakes such as force and duration. |
Seismogram | a recording produced be a seismograph. |
Richter Scale | numerical scale for expressing the magnitude of an earthquake on the basis of seismograph oscillations. |
Moment Magnitude Scale | used to measure the size of earthquakes. |
Modified mercalli scale | the effect of an earthquake on the earths surface. |
