Earthquake a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earths crust or volcanic action.
Focus the center of interest or the center of something active.
Seismic Waves the amount of earth quakes that happen in an area.
Epicenter the point of earths surface vertically above the focus of an earth quake.
Elastic rebound this is how energy is released from am earth quake.
Body waves seismic waves that move through the inside of earth.
P waves longitudinal earthquake wave that travels through the interior of the earth and is usually the first conspicuous wave to be recorded by a seismograph
S waves wave motion in a solid medium where the medium moves perpendicular to the direction of the travel of the wave.
Surface waves a seismic wave that travels across the surface of the earth.
Seismograph an instrument that measures and records details of earthquakes such as force and duration.
Seismogram a recording produced be a seismograph.
Richter Scale numerical scale for expressing the magnitude of an earthquake on the basis of seismograph oscillations.
Moment Magnitude Scale used to measure the size of earthquakes.
Modified mercalli scale the effect of an earthquake on the earths surface.
