evaporation | the process of turning from liquid into vapor |
condensation | water that collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it |
precipitation | rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground |
transpiration | the process where plants absorb water through the roots and then give off water vapor through pores in their leaves |
runoff | precipitation (water) that runs off the land |
groundwater | water stored beneath the Earth’s surface in rock |
source | place where a stream or river begins (headwaters) |
mouth | place where a stream or river ends, flowing into another body of water |
velocity | the distance water flows during a given period of time (meters per second or feet per second, etc.) |
bed load | sediment carried along the bottom of the stream channel |
tributaries | a river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake |
topography | the arrangement of the natural and artificial physical features of an area |
gradient | slope of the stream channel |
