| sphere | A round, 3-dimensional object--the shape of planet Earth |
| axis | The imaginary vertical line around which Earth spins |
| rotation | The spinning of Earth on its axis |
| revolution | The Earth's yearly orbit around the Sun |
| ellipse | An elongated, closed curve--Earth's revolution around the Sun |
| solstice | The day when the Sun reaches its greatest distance north or south of the equator |
| equinox | The day when the Sun is directly above Earth’s equator |
| moon phase | The different forms that the Moon takes in its appearance from Earth |
| new moon | Occurs when the Moon is between Earth and the Sun and cannot be seen |
| waxing | More of the Moon is able to be seen each night |
| full moon | Occurs when all of the Moon's surface facing Earth reflects light |
| waning | Less of the Moon is able to be seen each night |
| gibbous | Latin word for "humpbacked" |
| solar eclipse | Occurs when the Moon moves directly between the Sun and Earth and casts its shadow over a part of Earth |
| lunar eclipse | Occurs when Earth's shadow falls on the Moon |
| maria | Dark-colored relatively flat regions of the Moon formed when ancient lava reached the surface and filled in meteor craters |
| umbra | Darkest portion of the Moon's shadow during a total solar eclipse |
| penumbra | Lighter portion of the Moon's shadow during a partial solar eclipse |
| third quarter | waning Moon phase in which only one-half of the lighted side of the Moon can be seen from Earth |
