Leaf Anatomy and Morphology
| Term | Definition |

| Alternate | Leaves and Buds spaced along a stem in an alternating fashion |
| Compound Leaf | A leaf that has multiple blades |
| Cuticle | Waxy, non-cellular layer on top of the leaf |
| Dichotomous Venation | Spreading vein pattern of a leaf |
| Epidermis | Skin-like layer of cells found on both the top and bottom of the leaf |
| Guard Cells | Surrounds each Stoma |
| Leaf Blade | Main light-collecting structure |
| Leaflet | Multiple leaf blades |
| Midrib | Main vein running down leaf |
| Netted Veins | Veins in a branching pattern |
| Opposite | When leaves and buds are directly across from each other |
| Palisade Mesophyll | Standing cells responsible for photosynthesis |
| Palmate Compound | Leaf has all it's leaflets attached to a common point |
| Palmately Netted | Has several dominant veins branching out from the petiole |
| Parallel Veins | Monocot veins that never cross |
| Petiole | Not a stem, but has Xylem and Phloem that transport water and minerals |
| Pinnately Compound | Leaf that has multiple leaflets attached along a rachis (stem) |
| Pinnately Netted | Smaller veins branching out of the midrib |
| Simple Leaf | Leaf with only one blade |
| Spongy Mesophyll | Forms air spaces that hold raw materials |
| Stomata | Bottom of leaf with holes for gas exchange |
| Subopposite | Leaves and Buds are not spaces far enough apart to be alternate |
| Whorled | Three or more leaves and buds attached at a node |
